Contagious agalactia/Mycoplasma agalactiae

Contagious agalactia affects small ruminants, mainly sheep and goats, and is endemic in Mediterranean countries. It causes mastitis, arthritis and keratoconjunctivitis and results in serious economic losses due to significant, sharp reductions in milk production and the additional expenses associated with treatment, prevention and euthanisation.

Mycoplasma agalactiae, the main causal agent of contagious agalactia, spreads extensively and rapidly in herds. Infected animals must be detected early so they can be treated, segregated or euthanised before disease spreads and potentially impacts trade.

Serological testing identifies infection early and is an economical herd screening tool, helping decrease disease prevalence and minimise losses.

IDEXX M. agalactiae Screening Ab Test

The IDEXX M. agalactiae Screening Ab Test and Verification Ab Test detect antibodies directed to the lipoprotein p48 in sheep and goat sera. This protein is a major membrane lipoprotein of Mycoplasma agalactiae and is recognised early during infection. As no international standard for serum is available, the detectability has been settled on a system developed by the French reference laboratory (AFSSA Nice). The positive control corresponds to serum at 80–100 international units according to this system. The cutoff corresponds to a serum around 40–50 international units.
